National Parks History

Whether you are doing a school project or planning a vacation being informed about National Parks history is a good idea. You may be surprised to learn that the first ideas about these parks stemmed from poets and artists like William Wordsworth and George Caitlin. In 1832 Caitlin was quoted as expressing interest in a preserved national park area for the Native American people and also the majesty of nature. It was in the same year that Andrew Jackson signed paperwork setting aside four pieces of Hot Springs Arkansas land for preservation. However no government control of the area was taken until the year 1877.

President Lincoln signed an Act in 1864 which protected the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Giant Sequoia Grove. By 1872 the first national park in America, Yellowstone National Park, was established. Located in Wyoming, Yellowstone also extends to the states of Montana and Idaho. Perhaps the most popular feature of this park is Old Faithful, a famous geyser. Yellowstone has multiple ecosystems with the primary one being the subalpine forest. Many other parks were soon to follow, including Mount Rainier National Park in 1899 and Wind Cave National Park in 1903.

There are currently 58 national parks in the United States. Some states have lots of them, while others do not. Alaska and California have eight national parks each, while states such as Michigan and Ohio only have one. The American Southwest is a popular spot for parks including the Grand Canyon National Park, home to perhaps the most notable landmark in the country. The Grand Canyon is a natural wonder that spans an incredible distance and is a gorge through which the Colorado River flows.

To learn more about National Parks history, try searching online. The NPS website has information about every park in the U.S. including information like where to stay and what to do when you get there. NPS stands for National Park Service and is the government agency in charge of this area. You can also learn more about the history and heritage of U.S. parks by reading some books on the subject. A very comprehensive book on the parks of the nation is the National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States, which is now in its 5th updated edition.
