Jobs In National Parks
The establishment of national parks in the late 19th century not only led to the preservation of land and wildlife but also opened up lots of new employment opportunities. Today more than ever there is a need for competent employees to work at the national parks in the United States. A national park is by definition a federally protected area of land open to the public for a fee. Many people enjoy hiking, biking, boating, camping and other outdoor activities at these parks. There are 58 parks currently in the U.S. including those in Hawaii and Alaska.
No matter where you are in the country you should be able to find a nearby park. Areas like the Southwest are packed with parks because of the expanse of land and national landmarks there. Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is one of the most popular parks because it is home to the Grand Canyon, a natural wonder that attracts millions of people. Alaska also has a high concentration of national parks, including Denali National Park and Glacier Bay to name just a couple. Whether you're in the mountains of Virginia or the sunbaked shores of California you will find a park nearby.
The National Park Service, abbreviated NPS, is the place to go if you are looking for employment. They have a website online with a section especially for individuals seeking jobs. NPS is the place to find a wide variety of opportunities including both temporary and permanent positions. There are also volunteer opportunities available also for those who are willing to help the National Parks without receiving pay. On average, there are 16,000 permanent and 10,000 temporary employees working for the NPS.
To learn more about jobs in National Parks, visit the NPS website. On their personnel page you will find links to more information about temporary, permanent and volunteer opportunities. When applying for a job with a national park you can expect the process to be the same as if you were applying anywhere else. You will need to submit a resume and/or application outlining your skills and experience. In addition you will need to go through the interview process. Despite the various requirements and sometimes rigorous application process a job with the National Park Service could be exactly what you're looking for. This is especially true for anyone whose dream it is to work outdoors in a beautiful setting.
